June’s Birthstone

Pearl

Fit for a goddess, pearls are signifiers and symbols of nobility of position and also of soul and spirit. Like the aspect of the great goddess Juno that refers to her uniqueness, the Latin word for pearl literally means “unique”. No two pearls could ever be viewed as identical. Again, with Juno in her relationship to marriage, pearls were offered to the bride as a wedding gift and to wear on her wedding day because they also symbolize innocence, purity and lasting virtue. For ancient Mesoamerican cultures like the Aztecs and Incas pearls were a symbol of the moon and carried magical powers.

pearl1Pearls also symbolize a spiritual wisdom that is deeply grounded in women’s wisdom traditions that emphasize charity, honesty, integrity and spiritual transformation. If approached for their energetic nature pearls can serve as a channel both for evolving states of sacred wisdom and the receiving of spiritual guidance. For women especially, pearls signify the feminine nature and the wisdom to find and accept one’s true beauty; the deep inner calm, natural dignity and high spirits of a woman firmly situated in her own center. In its reflective aspects the pearl is like a mirror in which we are able to see ourselves in truth and also to realize how others may see us. Beginning as a small rough grain of sand trapped inside a beautiful shell, over time and with perseverance this tiny stone becomes a most exquisite jewel that yet signifies simplicity and honesty remembering its humble beginnings. Certainly the relationship between pearls and water is sacred and the healing touch of water that has been steeped in pearls, and set out under the full moon to absorb the magical silver light of her grace and gift will lift depression, calm the digestive organs, and clear and strengthen the solar plexus.
